Reflect & Renew: Journaling Prompts for a Meaningful Start of The Year

Every year during the first few weeks I sit with a friend and go through these journaling prompts. We write down the answers to each prompt on paper and then share them. When finished, we usually burn the papers as a way to release the contents and the intentions. I am always surprised by the amount of introspection that derives from this simple exercise.

Part One: Reflecting on Last Year

1. Accomplishments:

  • Reflect on three to five significant accomplishments from the past year. What goals did you achieve that you are particularly proud of you? It doesn't have to be huge milestones, it can be things that are meaningful to you

2. Challenges

  • What do you perceive were the biggest challenges or difficult moments you encountered over the last year? List between three and five

3. Learning Lessons:

  • Identify three to five things you learned over the past year. What did you learn and why is it significant?

4. Regrets

  • What are three to five things you wish you had done in the last year but didn't do or didn't do enough of?

5. Best Moments:

  • Recall three to five of the most memorable and joyful moments of the previous year. What made these moments special, and how did they impact your life?

Part Two: Looking Toward the New Year

1. Future Goals:

  • Outline three to five goals you want to accomplish in the upcoming year.

2. More of and Less of:

  • Identify three to five things you want to do more of in the new year and three to five things you want to do less of. How will you incorporate these changes into your life?

3. Word for the New Year

  • Choose one word that encapsulates your aspirations, mindset, or theme for the upcoming year. This word should serve as a guiding force for your actions and decisions throughout the year

Journaling prompts can be a compass guiding introspection and self-discovery. They can help us unlock our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through thoughtful questions, journaling prompts invite us to navigate our past, present, and future, fostering personal growth, clarity, and a deeper connection with ourselves. Try these out and let me know how they went.
